Grocery Budget

So, I'm curious what a typical family's grocery budget is. I have been way over our budget the past couple months and although I can blame part of it on the rising prices of EVERYTHING, I don't think it is the entire problem. Now I am wondering if our budget is realistic - it can't be my fault right :-)?! I include all our baby, cleaning, and beauty products in that one category but I feel like I'm a pretty good bargain shopper.
I added a survey over to the side, so take a second to let me know your average monthly costs. Thanks!

walmart is as inexpensive as groceries get and my last 2 trips have cost about 25-30% more. some individual items are twice as much. i am sure it is all due to fuel and shipping costs. :(

The prices are getting insane and our salaries aren't going up. I wish there was a way to protest that. I just joined a website called thegrocerygame.com. If you sign up they will give you a print out of everthing on sale at your choice of store. All you have to do then is get the Sunday paper with all the coupons (or you can print some of them off from the web site). Between the sales and the coupons from that week you save a ton! Last week I had 19$ worth of coupons not counting what I already knew was less than full price because of the print out. I think it costs about 5$ a month to join, which isn't too bad. But when you get the hang of it you could probably cancel the membership and do it on your own. Check it out and let me know what you think!

I did a free trial of the grocery game last year and thought it was fun, but wasn't willing to pay the $10/month - maybe I'll try it again.

I am grateful for this post. I too feel way over budget and have a resolution each month to do better but it pretty much turns out the same. Let me know if anyone gives you any good advice.

I feel like I pay a fortune at the store each week and come home with very little... it drives me crazy!! If I had more energy (and a more patient child in the car), I would drive a little further to a much cheaper store that has good produce for half the cost of the regular chain grocery stores. But somehow driving 20 minutes to get cheap produce isn't always worth it to me when the regular store is 5 minutes away. Our sort of solution is we cook way more vegetarian meals these days since meat is so pricey.

I've noticed that my grocery bill has increased too. I know it's because of increased prices. Let me know if you find any good solutions.

I agree with Diane! Everytime I go shopping the prices are higher!

It is an on-going battle to make it to the grocery store and out having stayed in my budget. Heber recently put me on a cash only system for a while. I get cash each week for groc etc... I have a certain amt and have to plan ahead for a few things and wait on others...but when the cash is gone..it's gone until the next week. The only thing I use debit/credit on now is medical and gas! It works for us now and keeps me in check for things I really need and things I don't. Oh and I rarely shop with my kiddo's. I go when Heber comes home because I find that when I shop with them I NEVER stay in my budget..they make me too flustered!

I guess things are the same all around the world.... we have the same problem too.
Enrico and I have just started living together since October 2007, and my sweet grandma maria calls me every month and takes me shopping for the "BIG" things like household cleansers, detergents, T.P. ect...
I am very greatful for her help and very lucky to have a grandma who looks out for me. Without her help, I'm sure we would struggle even more monthly.
