Twilight Saga Discussion

So, now that I am finished reading all 4 books I'm dying to hear other people's opinions on everything. (and thank you Emily and Leighanna for beginning the discussion today) I feel like an addict on the road to recovery and isn't the first step to admit you have a problem and talk about it?!

I also don't want to spoil anything for those of you who have yet to read them though, so the discussion will take place only in the comments - I'm not posting anything here.

**Here's a link to Stephenie's interview with Ellen Degeneres this week** (thanks Chrissy for the heads up there!)

If you HAVE read them, PLEASE leave me a comment with your opinions! And, just so you know, I can't decide if I like the first one or the last one the best, but those are my two favorites :-)!

Ok, before I comment on the book, I just watched the movie trailer for the first time and I think I agree that the actor playing Edward actually isn't a bad choice, but I'm not so sure about Bella. I guess I'll have to wait and see.

So, for those of you who I haven't talked to yet, here are some of my main thoughts/issues.

-I was SO over the Jacob problems in the books 2 and 3! I just wanted him to go away so Edward and Bella could live happily ever after. Edward was beyond patient with the whole situation and I felt like Bella was being really selfish to only be thinking of what she wanted. It's not that I disliked Jacob himself, I just disliked the way his relationship with Bella hurt Edward (because I LOVE Edward).
- I was SO happy with the last book and how everything turned out in the end. I know some people were bothered by Renesmee, but I don't feel super strongly one way or the other about her. I didn't mind her, but I could have done without her too. I just loved reading about Bella and Edward's relationship and knowing that they would have their happy ending finally. I thought the whole Charlie being able to be part of their lives so soon was maybe pushing it a little too far though.
- I'm curious if Stephenie will eventually write another series with Renesmee as the main character. I think it would be interesting.

So there are some beginning thoughts...what did you think?!

I love Jacob. I think he and Bella would have been super fun together. Though I do like that she and Edward were great together, I would like to see how the story went with Jacob as her main squeeze. I felt so bad for him all the time. He really loved her. I thought all the books were great! Glad you jumped on board.

I really liked the Bella that came out in the last book...She was finally her own independent woman. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Edward too and always wanted to see them married and happy (I've never been a big fan of Jacob-book two drove me nuts...) but I really like that she was more in control of her own life in the last book (Having the baby against every one's wishes...Having such a cool power and using it on her own..). I just felt more like she was a real person as opposed to this totally love-infatuated "I'll do anything you say" Bella from the first 3 books. I didn't mind the baby either...It wrapped up their little family nicely....The name was pretty hilarious to me though...I thought Jacob could've ended up with Leah and had it not be so creepy with him imprinting on a baby and all....

I say that's a good call on Jacob and Leah getting together instead! Oh well.

I really was happy that Edward and Bella ended up together. I was often mad at Bella for being drawn to Jacob when Edward was so OBVIOUSLY the better choice! I was left wanting to know more about what happened to Leah, that story line kind of got dropped. But most of all I really wanted a fight scene in the end. I wanted the Volturi to be taken down, and I was even ready for one of the more important characters to die, like Rosalie, or Emmett. I still love the series, I think I just wanted more of a Harry Potter ending. Everything just seemed to work out too perfectly to be believable. But then again we are talking about Vampires here!

There needs to be more Edwards these days. I was mad when he left her and I understood why her dad was so mad. I liked Jacob, but he got a little annoying and disrespectful at times...his character looks really cute in the new movie. I wasn't annoyed with Renesmee, but I was annoyed with Bella's pregnancy and how she was stubborn and just willing to watch Edward dying over her almost killing herself. It was almost like her character changed a litte during that part. I was also a little creeped out by the imprinting on the baby thing as well. Other than that, I LOVED the books...all of them! And I'm very impressed that you were able to read them all so quickly. Oh, and my favorite character was Alice...I need my own Alice.

So, how long did it take before you guys felt like you were back to "normal" after reading them? I don't know if it's because I read them non-stop all at once or what, but it is ALL I can think about! I'm nervous that I'll never be normal again :-)!

I was a "Team Jacob" person as I read the first three books. I think part of that came from the thought of her having to "die" and become a vampire to be with Edward and having to leave her family. I do like the way that they tied that up in the book. Reading Midnight Sun and seeing things from Edward's perspective (plus seeing how he was toward her in this last book)helped me to like him a little more, too.

I thought there were some things that were a little too cheesy in the 4th book like the name Reneesme and her imprinting on Jacob. As others mentioned, I would have much rather seen him end up with Leah, and I do think Stephenie Meyer left the door open for another book about Reneesme and Jacob. I was also disappointed that things were just so perfect and easy in the "Showdown" with the Volturi at the end.

It only takes a few days to get back to "normal" after reading the books, by the way :)

Now that you've finished the Twilight books, there's always The Host.

What is Midnight Sun?

Midnight Sun is her new book from Edward's perspective. There is a copy on her site that she posted after it was leaked out online, but she is still working on the real one, so I think I'm going to wait until it comes out officially to read it...in case she changes some things.

I personaly was kind of glad they didn't fight the Volturi at the end. Maybe I'm just a sucker for a happy, perfect ending :-), but I also felt it was actually more believable. I really don't think they could have beat the Volturi. I had so prepared myself for Bella and Edward to both die that I was thrilled when EVERYONE got to live :-)!

Okay, I am not reading the comments, but I did watch the interview with Ellen, which lead me to some movie trailers, which I shouldn't have watched. I just am going to have to break down and read this. I am feeling way left out. Nothing like peer pressure.

I'm laughing so hard right now! Why couldn't you have read this with me so we could have had therapy sessions every day? You and your book club...

Where do I start? I agree with everything you said except I do NOT like the Edward they chose for the movie and I like the Bella she chose. She's just a plain jane but Edward is supposed to be incredibly gorgeous and buff and he looks a little scraggly to me.

Yup, imprinting on a baby is weird and the name was silly. I thought Leah would imprint on Jacob. Bummer that didn't happen.

You'll feel normal in no time. It's called withdrawals.

See you tomorrow?

I'm glad I'll feel normal again soon hopefully, I was really getting worried that I may actually need counseling...this has never happened to me before :-)!
As far as the movie characters go...I think was so prepared to be SUPER disappointed in Edward that I was pleasantly surprised that he wasn't as bad as I was expecting. I like his face, but I do think he should be bigger. I like the look of the girl playing Bella, but her acting in the trailer has me worried...we'll see.

I really hope Midnight Sun comes out sometime soon...I caved and read the first chapter she posted today because I was craving some Edward in my life :-) and now I want to read the rest!

I saw the interview the other day and think I might just have to curb my computer time and pick up a book! You've all got me so excited!

oh, and thanks for the mention on your "Online Shopping" Column :)

Marci, I am happy to hear someone else is as obsessed as I am. I read all three books last August (2007) and had to start over this August just to get ready for the fourth. The first time around I read all three in five days so I thought I would drag it out so I could enjoy it a little more. That didn't work...I read all three in six days and the fourth in 24 hours. I agree with you the 1st and 4th were the best and I don't know which one I like better. Don't let the obsession where off too soon because the movie is only two months away..and then we'll just hope that Stefenie comes out with something even better if possible. :)
