Katy Stake's 1st 5K

Yesterday our church hosted a 5K/1 mile family walk and they went all out. Unfortunately a cold front came through on Friday night so instead of the nice summer-like weather we'd had the few days leading up to the event, it was COLD and WINDY (for us Texans anyway)...42 degrees when the races started at 8am. Ella and Addie are NOT fans of the cold :-). Don't they look excited as we waited for it all to begin?!

I had planned on doing the mile walk, but with Addie crying about wanting to go in the castle (a bounce house they had set up) and Ella crying about being cold we just stayed behind to take pictures of Mike as he set off for the 5k. He had been really looking forward to the race but has been sick the past few days and I know he was disappointed to not get a "real" time out of it.

There were plenty of activities to keep us entertained despite the weather and the girls managed to have a lot of fun. We just went inside to walk around the booths set up in the gym to warm up for a little while every now and then.

Addie got her face painted for the first time. Initially she was going to get a butterfly like Ella, but we quickly realized she wasn't going to hold still for long so we changed it to a simple heart :-).

After all the crying about the castle neither of the girls ended up going inside because they were too scared of all the crazy boys jumping around. They did think it was pretty cool to see the firetruck and ambulance though, especially Ella who went inside both!
PhotobucketPhotobucket
Outside there were other fun activities for kids like making your own healthy snack, planting a vegetable to grow and eat later and a workout station with hula hoops, etc. Inside you could get a massage, listen to a nutritionist, learn about emergency preparedness with food storage, 72 hour kits and more (Ella got to grind some wheat), you could complete an ID kit for your child, etc. I couldn't believe it all. It was really impressive and I hope they do it again next year!

Gabriella's Turn

Next week is Ella's Kindergarten orientation!!! And then later in the week I go register her for Elementary school!!! I can't believe it! How did she get so big?! What will I do without her all day, 5 days a week?! What will Addie do?!
Photobucket
She is SOOOO excited though. Although Ella is often a little timid and shy around people and places that she doesn't know she has always been excited to try new things. She went right into nursery when she was 18 months old without looking back. In fact, when I came to pick her up at the end of church, all nervous about how she had done, she was sitting in the back playing happily away while all the other kids swarmed the gate waiting for their parents. She has LOVED preschool this year and I know she will do great at her "big" school...I just can't believe she is already old enough to go!
Photobucket
Ella Bella's favorite thing to do lately is puzzles. She sits every afternoon and works on them and is always just as proud of herself for completing them the fifth time as she was the first time.
Photobucket
She LOVES to be big. Yesterday she was making us pose for pictures and then told me she was going to put them on her blog :-). Although we've recently had to deal with some more big girl issues, like lying, she wants to be good and do the right thing and never wants us to be disappointed in her (which is usually what prompts the lying in the first place). Ella is my big helper and is a great motivator for Addie to help as well. At the end of the day when we are cleaning up their room, Addie will always join in once she sees that Ella is helping.
Photobucket
Ella is the BEST big sister. She loves Addie and is almost always good about sharing with her and being sweet with her, even if Addie is not in the mood :-). She loves to help me tuck her in bed and give her kisses and hugs. Sometimes the little mini-mom in her comes out and I have to remind her that I am the mother and can handle it, but most often I appreciate her help. I know she sometimes gets a little jealous of Addie but she is always genuinely happy for her when she accomplishes something new.
Photobucket
Ella is about as girly as they come, at least for now. She does not like bugs (well, that is an understatement, she FREAKS OUT if any kind of bug is near her), she doesn't like to be dirty or cold, she is scared easily and definitely prefers the happy world of Barbies, Princesses and Ponies. Yesterday when we were heading out for the park she put her Carebear in Addie's little dog carrier and had her camera all ready to go. She would wear a dress everyday if she could and she loves to pick out her hair styles and accessories.
Ella is a smart cookie and hates to mess up or be wrong. She usually catches on to things pretty quickly, but I often have to give her lots of reassurance that it is ok to mess up at first and that we have to practice things to get better at them. For a long time she wouldn't even try to draw the letter "S" because the first time she did it didn't turn out. She loves to proudly show us all the things she worked on and made while she was at school.
Photobucket
Ella LOVES her Dad. She loves me too of course :-), but she just watches Mike with admiration and wants to be with him whenever he is home. She loves to show him how fast she can run because she knows he loves running...and she has his legs, so my guess is they'll be running buddies as she gets older.
And, of course, we LOVE our Gabriella!

Adeline's Turn

I took Addie girl to the doctor early in the week because she was suffering big time from what looked like seasonal allergies...constant running nose and watery eyes. She would walk up to me with her eyes dripping and say, "Crying." Poor baby.
Photobucket
It was our first visit to our new pediatrician who is only a few minutes away (as opposed to nearly 30 minutes) and I really liked her although I do miss the nice atmosphere of the old office. The doctor suggested giving her some Zyrtec once or twice a day and it hasn't seemed to do much for poor Addie, but luckily with the cold front that came through last night they seemed to clear up some.
I am happy to report that Addie has progressed on from only identifying purple and pink and has most of the colors down now. She does sometimes like to be funny and say the wrong one on purpose and then laugh though :-). I often hear her singing songs by herself as she plays...it's one of my favorite things!
PhotobucketPhotobucket
It is amazing how different Addie and Ella are. Addie is definitely more destructive and very full of personality. Here are some of her latest antics. She hadn't even touched the tree since she first learned to walk and could easily make her way to it and then out of the blue the other afternoon she was just standing there grabbing handfuls of moss and throwing them on the ground. As for the book, she worked on that one night when she was supposed to be sleeping. When I was having my talk with her about what she had done in the morning she wouldn't even look at me, she totally knew she wasn't supposed to do what she did, little stinker!
Photobucket
Adeline is improving on going to sleep in the room with Ella, but we still never know what we may find when we go in to check on her. The one guarantee is lots of toys all around her bed! I took this picture during her nap yesterday and last night when we went in she had managed to knock a picture off the wall and the little purse hanger down as well. She requests her blankie, her animals (4 beanie babies from our friend Miss Janet) and her princess figurines to be in bed with her when we tuck her in along with whichever book we read that night.
Photobucket
She does provide lots of entertainment though. She loves to make funny faces and get us to copy her. If she ever says anything that makes us laugh she says it over and over and over, because obviously it was hysterical!
Addie is super sensitive to food textures as well. She will not eat anything that is mushy or slimy (in her opinion). Some things she doesn't like as a result are typical from little kids (but not typical in our family where they have been eating them forever)...zucchini, creamy soup, mashed potatoes, etc. although she loves yogurt. This week I bought little JELL-O pudding cups as a special treat for Ella's lunch at school. Addie and I ate our lunch at home and then I told her I had a special treat and got her a pudding cup...and she HATED it! I could hardly get her to try it. And she is our sugar fanatic so it was especially surprising, crazy kid.
Photobucket
She loves to read and color and her favorite show is a Strawberry Shortcake DVD we have. It is the only show she actually pays attention to.
Although she loves to be girly (wear crowns, choosing her own jewelry, is addicted to shoes, and can identify every princess and most princes around), she also loves to inspect bugs and climb on things and be outside as much as possible. Although she does get mad at the wind and the rain for messing her hair up (she yells, "NO!" to it while holding her hair down).
Photobucket
Addie LOVES Ella. She loves her alone time too, but she is always so excited to pick Ella up from school and asks about her all day when she's gone. She is really going to miss her next year when she starts kindergarten.
Photobucket
And of course, we LOVE our Adeline and couldn't imagine life without her!

Love Them...

Love This Picture!
Photobucket
For the most part the girls aren't crazy sleepers (although the other night Addie was sleeping on the floor when we went to check on them), but this night they were both sprawled everywhere and out cold.
PhotobucketPhotobucket
Andy the Armadillo was at the library storytime, but Ella and Addie both preferred staying far away from him and coloring. Brooklynn was the only brave one of the group (and even she looks a little unsure :-).

Enjoying it For Now

I just had to let you know that I am temporarily in the lead in our March Madness tournament challenge (18 people filled out brackets). I had the lead briefly during the earlier rounds but have been lost in the middle for awhile now while Serena held on tightly to the #1 spot. Thanks to Villanova and Missouri last though, I currently have the best chance to win (although most likely some other game will mess it up for me :-)! Here's hoping Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Michigan St and Missouri make it to the final four :-)!

Thank You!

I just got home from the library with the girls and walked out to the end of the driveway to bring in our trashcan and recycling bin. We have been in need of a new recycling bin for quite awhile and calling the company about it is one of those things I need to do that is continuously put off until the next day and the next and the next. I used duct tape to hold it together and it helped for awhile, but lately it's been looking pretty shabby. Well, today when I went to pick it up I realized it was nice and new and shiny and NOT cracked anywhere! Our little guys took it upon themselves to bring us a new one without me doing a thing. I'm sure they were tired of carefully picking up our stuffed bin in a way that prevented everything from falling out, but still I was impressed! Thank You Recycling Men!!!

Take Your Pick
