Katy Stake's 1st 5K

Yesterday our church hosted a 5K/1 mile family walk and they went all out. Unfortunately a cold front came through on Friday night so instead of the nice summer-like weather we'd had the few days leading up to the event, it was COLD and WINDY (for us Texans anyway)...42 degrees when the races started at 8am. Ella and Addie are NOT fans of the cold :-). Don't they look excited as we waited for it all to begin?!

I had planned on doing the mile walk, but with Addie crying about wanting to go in the castle (a bounce house they had set up) and Ella crying about being cold we just stayed behind to take pictures of Mike as he set off for the 5k. He had been really looking forward to the race but has been sick the past few days and I know he was disappointed to not get a "real" time out of it.

There were plenty of activities to keep us entertained despite the weather and the girls managed to have a lot of fun. We just went inside to walk around the booths set up in the gym to warm up for a little while every now and then.

Addie got her face painted for the first time. Initially she was going to get a butterfly like Ella, but we quickly realized she wasn't going to hold still for long so we changed it to a simple heart :-).

After all the crying about the castle neither of the girls ended up going inside because they were too scared of all the crazy boys jumping around. They did think it was pretty cool to see the firetruck and ambulance though, especially Ella who went inside both!

Outside there were other fun activities for kids like making your own healthy snack, planting a vegetable to grow and eat later and a workout station with hula hoops, etc. Inside you could get a massage, listen to a nutritionist, learn about emergency preparedness with food storage, 72 hour kits and more (Ella got to grind some wheat), you could complete an ID kit for your child, etc. I couldn't believe it all. It was really impressive and I hope they do it again next year!

Sounds like quite the church activity! That would be fun to do for our Single's ward, I think.

So how did Mike do?

Wow, that is a lot of work, sounds fun, too bad the weather wasn't better, but I'm sure it was still great.

I'm totally impressed!! That is a major activity. And I will agree that 42 degrees is cold to be outside for a long time :) We hit 53 degrees today, whoo hoo :)
