Our Night on the Katy Prairie

My friend Emily discovered a series of summer evening classes offered by the Katy Prairie Conservancy. We were able to squeeze in the class that I thought sounded the most fun, The Wet Wild, before our big trip. It was a bit of drive to the location, but not as far as I thought, and we all had a blast. Addie especially LOVED it and was so sad when it was time to go.
We started out in the class room talking about wetlands and doing some experiments to show why they are important. They also talked about what animals live there, etc. We went outside so the kids could pretend they were raccoons. They had to shut their eyes and dig for craw fish and the girls were both expert raccoons :-). We went back in for snack and to build our own minnow traps before heading out to the wetland area the conservancy has created.
It was 7pm by this time, so still warm but not scorching hot. I had fun just watching the girls trying to catch water creatures and excitedly showing them to the group leaders. One volunteer was especially helpful with Addie who was having a hard time with the net. Addie told her, "I'll find something and you can get it!" They caught a huge spider which the leader girl put into a viewfinder and Addie was very proud as everyone looked at it that she was the one to find it. The coolest thing I think we looked at was a little pregnant fresh water shrimp. You could see all the little green eggs inside of her through the magnifier.
They also got to look at the moon through a telescope before heading out as an added bonus. We will definitely be keeping an eye on their schedule for other fun events and classes. Addie complained that we didn't get to stay very long (even though it was 8pm and we had been there for two hours :-). So fun to discover these Katy gems!
(and I have to document that Ella was very annoyed with me for having her wear non-skinny jeans despite my explanation that we may be getting muddy and don't want to wear our nice, cute clothes...it has begun :-)

and Addie: "I don't want to go! We haven't been here long enough and I still need to find things in here!"
(but for the record Ella does want to go back)

This looks like great fun. Once again it made me wish we lived closer. The girls are looking so grown up and beautiful. Looking forward to see you all soon! it has been too long!!!
