Colorado - Pike's Peak

We knew we wanted to stop in Colorado Springs again and explore Garden of the Gods since it was Addie's very favorite stop on last year's trip. It turns out there is TONS to do in Colorado Springs and one of them caught Mike's attention. The Pike's Peak Cog Railway is a train that takes you up to the top of Pike's Peak...over 14,000 feet! We decided to try and take a ride but it was already Friday night so we weren't sure it would work out. When I called the reservation number it said the trains were full for Saturday but that people were welcome to try and get on stand by. So we headed over first thing in the morning to see if we could get a spot. We were hopeful, but had decided we would check out some Indian ruins and a waterfall in CO springs if the train didn't work out. It ended up being our lucky day though! We were able to go on the next train AND all sit together too! We got some snacks and waited for the train to arrive.

It was a 1 1/2 hour ride up to the peak. Once on top we had 30 minutes to spend out and about before the train left again. I thought that would plenty of time, but it is HARD to move around up that high! so it didn't leave us much time to enjoy the view when you factor in bathroom breaks, etc. Just walking around a few minutes to see the view and then going into the restaurant area had us stopping and breathing hard like we'd run a few miles. Addie got a little altitude sick and had to sip water on the way back down to avoid throwing up.
The tour guides had mentioned the famous doughnuts at the restaurant and the kids were so excited to have them and then were disappointed. They were a spice cake type doughnut, not the ones they are used to, and while Mike and I thought they were pretty good, I can't say we would go all the way back for them. What is amazing though is the fact that there is a whole restaurant and gift shop on top of a 14,000 foot mountain!!!
Overall it was definitely an awesome experience and if you are ever in Colorado Springs, we recommend checking it out!

The nice man who took our picture had a decent camera, so I had high hopes, but he totally cut off the sign. Oh well, my eyes were closed anyway I suppose :-).
