The Grand Canyon

Tuesday, July 22nd, was our day to explore the Grand Canyon. We headed out from Flagstaff early in the morning to be sure we arrived with some time to explore before it was unbearably hot (learned that lesson at the dam!).
We came into the park from the East entrance of the South Rim after reading that it much less busy than the main south entrance. It was definitely nice and empty! I think I have seen too many photoshopped images of the canyon though because to be honest I was a little underwhelmed. As a result I was convinced that we needed to go over to the main south entrance to see the really cool part, but it was going to take awhile to get there and it was going the opposite direction of where we wanted to be headed so Mike convinced me that it was all going to look the same (and after looking at more picture online I think he was right). We did drive west a bit and stop at a pull out where we were able explore more and really get a better feel for just how enormous the grand canyon is and I was glad we did. I would like to go back when the kids are older and do some real hiking down towards the bottom, maybe raft the river that runs through it and truly get a sense of how amazing it is. It was really fun for us all to experience this first trip together though!
As we left the park and headed back out towards the main freeway we stopped at another scenic lookout point. There were some hilarious signs on the way down and more amazing views to take in. The kids enjoyed throwing rocks into the deep crevices and Addie tried to catch herself a desert lizard with no luck :-).
Our last stop in the area was at the Cameron Trading Post where I had read were some great Navajo Tacos. It was my last food must of the trip and they were yummy! We ordered it to go and they even cut and packaged it up into 4 servings for us which made it much easier to eat. We got an order of onion rings there as well though, and they were AMAZING! So, if you ever go, be sure to get some!
