TAGS Weekend

We just got back from a whirlwind trip to California, but before we left we were on the road to Austin and San Antonio. Ella was able to swim with some of her best swimming buds on a relay at the TAGS meet (Texas Age Group Swimming Championships). It is best described as the state finals for swimmers ages 14 and under and it was a pretty big deal to get to go...so she was thrilled naturally :-). Their relay didn't swim until Sunday but we decided to make a weekend of it... do a time trial on Friday, watch some of the swimming and spend some time in San Antonio with Mike's fam as well.
We hit the road Thursday afternoon to go to Austin for the night. First stop was In n Out! Swimming in the hotel pool and watching Sponge Bob, a treat reserved only for when we are traveling because it is ALWAYS on at hotels for some reason were also top priorities. That was the night that Ella wanted to come down to the hotel lobby with Mike and I to ask about getting some extra blankets so we thought it would be ok to leave Addie and Preston in the room watching TV by themselves. We told them not to open the door and went downstairs (it was a small hotel). We were back in 5 minutes and as the elevator doors opened to our hallway we saw two crazy kids running back and forth. Not surprisingly it was our two crazy kids who left the room for some reason and then were locked out...those two are aging me very, very quickly!

Friday morning we got up fairly early, ate breakfast and headed to the University of Texas pool. The facilities were very impressive and Ella felt pretty cool with her athlete's badge allowing her down by the pool while the rest of us had to stay up top. She participated in the parade (our team decided to go with a velociraptor theme for whatever reason which was a little tricky to have props for) and then we spent most the day hanging out and watching all the races. There were some amazing swimmers there! Once the prelims were over Ella participated in a time trial for the 200 IM. She added a little time but I think it was good for her to get to swim in the pool before the relay on Sunday. Then we headed to San Antonio to visit with all the Freemans (and eat at our favorite Mexican place near them).

Saturday we had the day to spend hanging out with everyone. I did family pictures for Chrissy's family and then we had breakfast all together and just talked and played games. Eventually we hit the road back to Austin to stay the night in another hotel to be prepared for Sunday.
The last day of the meet was really fun! We got to cheer on Ella's bestie Megan as she raced in the 50 Free and Ella loved hanging out with Megan, Joyce and Grace while they waited for their relay time. Meema, Papa, and Chrissy's whole family came to cheer her on. Ella swam a 50 breaststroke in the 200 Medley relay and swam a personal best. Their relay overall took 1 second off their seed time and placed 22nd. It was a fun experience for her and we were so glad that all the family could see her swim her favorite stroke. Before we hit the road home we went to the famous Salt Lick BBQ restaurant with everyone. It is insane how huge it is!!!
