Katy Aquatics Banquet with Olympian Misty Hyman

5-7-17-5
Sunday night was the annual spring banquet for Katy Aquatics. Ever since Ella first started swimming year round she has loved going. They always include a guest speaker and this year was our favorite one yet, gold medalist Misty Hyman came to share her experiences. It was really inspiring to hear her talk about how she and her coach had to figure out a way for her to beat the bigger girls in fly who didn't need to take as many strokes as she did. She had perfected her underwaters to give her the advantage she needed and was training to make the 2000 Olympic team (and after coming in 3rd at the US trials in '96 by a fraction of a second) when they changed the rules and she had to adapt again. She played a couple video clips, one being her gold medal race in Sydney where she beat the Australian who held the world record and was undefeated in the event (200 fly) for 6 years. Even knowing she was going to win, watching it gave me chills, plus she was in the room with us!!! It was pretty amazing, even for us non-swimmers :-). I am thankful that Ella has this swim family that she loves so much and who support her doing what she loves most.
