Meet of Champs 2017

Tuesday, June 27th, was our Meet of Champs for summer swim team. Sadly we did not get to have our last regular season meet because of crazy storms coming through so Addie and Preston didn't get their last chances to improve their times (which Addie was really pumped for). Preston only qualified in Freestyle but both girls were in every event. Addie actually ended up as our team's top seed for freestyle, backstroke and IM!!! The night before some of the other divisions had their meets and ended up with long weather delays so we were nervous for Tuesday, especially since we had bad luck last year, but luckily the weather cooperated and we got everything in! It was miserably hot for awhile, but I didn't even care as long as the kids got to swim all their races!
The kids all swam really well and dropped time in pretty much every race. One of the highlights of the night was Ella's two relays breaking the division records. Everyone was really excited, especially the medley relay which they crushed by 2 seconds. The Millers and my mom and grandma braved the heat and stressful crowd situation to come and cheer on the kids for most of the meet! It was a fun night, but we were still all relieved when it was over :-).
And just for fun, here are our past years at Meet of Champs... 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012 and Ella's first year of swim where she learned to make it across the pool, 2011.

Ella's first AAA time!

We arrived home from girls camp Friday afternoon, got Ella some lunch, had her rest a bit (there was not a lot of sleep that last night of camp) and then had to leave for her important gulf swim meet a couple hours later. I was already nervous about her going into this meet with a lack of sleep and that was before we knew she would also be dealing with stitches in her finger, so I was feeling anxious :-). There were just two races that first night and we knew she would have the chance to swim them both again in July, so I told her to just do her best and see how it went. She was feeling very very nervous about her finger before getting in the water for warm-ups but luckily discovered that it didn't bother her too much. She had a good first night and we all were put at ease a bit about the rest of the weekend. Overall it was an excellent meet for Ella! She dropped a lot of time on every event, got within 0.78 of the TAGS time for 100 fly (she got close on others as well, but that was the closest one) AND got her very first AAA time on the 400 IM. That was an emotional moment for me! Such a big accomplishment for her and my parents and grandma were able to be there for it which made it even more special. Now Ella has one more chance at each of her races to clinch those TAGS times. It should be an exciting and stressful next few weeks :-)!

Girls' Camp 2017 (and Ella's first stitches)

After having such a great time at camp last summer, Ella was even more excited for this year! We were at a new camp and it was much closer to home which was amazing and overall I think everyone agreed that they liked this one better. I was able to be there for the second half of camp and I really felt like the girls in our ward got along so well this time. It wasn't always the same groups of girls hanging out which I loved. I'm so thankful for the leaders that put in so much time and effort to make it an amazing and uplifting week! I'm also thankful there are so many awesome girls Ella's age in our ward and stake!
So, we all met up early Tuesday morning and Ella headed off to the camp. I spent the next 36 hours at home and then left to join them Wednesday afternoon. I was on my way there when I got a call from a number I didn't recognize but luckily answered anyway. It was the camp director letting me know that Ella had an accident during her knife certification and had cut her finger pretty badly. The on-site nurse was pretty sure she needed stitches because of how deep it was and the location (on the joint of her finger) but said she could wait until I got there to be taken to a doctor. I called Mike and he started looking for urgent care offices near the camp. I could not believe the timing of it and was pretty stressed knowing all the important swim meets Ella had coming up within the next few weeks (including one starting the Friday she would be leaving camp).
When I arrived Ella was in good spirits and her cute youth camp leaders were still by her side. The thought of getting stitches stressed her out but other than that she was enjoying all the attention and said "Now I have finally been hurt!" Haha :-). The urgent care wasn't too far, but as all urgent cares go, took forever. The nice doctor told us she would have to be out of the pool for 10 days (and inside I was thinking, yeah right!) and gave her 4 stitches. Ella was brave and said it wasn't as bad as she thought it would be. We stopped at CVS for bandages and her amoxicillin prescription and by that evening she was back at camp like nothing had ever happened.
We had two more fun nights, one rainy day and then headed home Friday morning to get home in time for her big swim meet...stitches and all.
