We headed out from Austin around 2:30pm Sunday to start the eternal drive to California. Mike was amazing, as usual, and drove us all the way to Tuscon that first day. We arrived around 1:30am and all hopped right into bed at our hotel to get some sleep. The next morning we had breakfast and were off again! The driving itself didn't go quite as well this time around...Addie had some rough moments where everyone was doing something to annoy her and there were some definite meltdowns. When she fell asleep we were all relieved and she woke up in a little bit of a better mood :-). It is a lot of time in the car for us all and when we made it to Fresno we were thrilled! The Expedition started making some weird sounds as we got close to Fresno and we were hoping it would just hang on until we arrived. We pulled into the Mexican restaurant Casa Quintero, which is always our first stop, and it died. Luckily it came back on after our first shredded beef tacos of the trip and we were able to get to Mike's Grandma's house for the night!
We spend the night there and had fun visiting with Grandma Freeman and LaRee. They are always such great hosts! Putting up with our stir-crazy children, feeding us, letting us do laundry and LaRee helped drive us around to take our car to the shop and to pick up our rental RV. I know the kids will definitely remember getting to help them crush their aluminum cans and playing in the electric recliner chair :-).
With the RV loaded up and the Expedition apparently fixed, we headed off on our camping adventure at Summerdale. We stopped to pick up In n Out for lunch on our way and when we got back to the RV to eat the generator wouldn't turn on. We couldn't believe our luck. After calling the company we rented from and not having much luck with their quick fixes we decided to just head out and if we really needed it we would call their crew to come fix it at the campsite. We were tired of waiting around for car repairs! Luckily it wasn't an issue while we were camping.
After the 24 hour drive to make it to Fresno, the hour up to the campsite flew by and I was shocked when we were already there! We stopped at the grocery store to load up on all the food and supplies we would need for the next 3 days...like 4 bags of potato chips, smore's ingredients and some fruit too ;-)...and then we were officially ready to camp.
It is always fun pulling into our favorite spot at Summerdale and having it look pretty much the same as it did all the other times we have come. We ran right down to the river to look for fish and crawfish.
I don't even remember why he got upset :-)
Our first adventure was walking up the hillside to go check out a pretty little waterfall. It was our first time to see just how cold the water really was...and it was cold! Addie is the bravest when it comes to the cold water for sure and it never takes long for her interest in catching crawfish to overtake her comfort level. It really is such a beautiful little spot and since it is just outside the craziness of the heart of Yosemite, really is a little paradise.
there is fools' gold everywhere
Back at our campsite we got to work prepping dinner and settling fully into the camping life. Addie was back in the river catching her first of many crawfish, Ella enjoyed some down time, Preston ran all over the mountainside like a crazy kid and Mike caught fish to go with our dinner. For our first night of smore's we used Reece's Peanut Butter cups. The only reasons I survive camping are hot chocolate, smore's, the beautiful surroundings, lots of potato chips, and an RV with a shower and bed to sleep in at night ;-).
Ella's perfectly roasted marshmallow
One of our camping traditions is making fun videos in the pitch black with glowsticks. The kids love it :-)!
